How I Help Seniors Feel Comfortable in Front of the Camera
Mar 17 2026 | By: Sundberg Photography
One of the first things many seniors tell me when they arrive for their session is:
“I’m really awkward in photos.”
Or sometimes parents say it first:
“They hate getting their picture taken.”
The truth is, most people feel this way at the beginning of a photo session. Being in front of a camera can feel unfamiliar, and seniors often worry about posing, smiling, or looking natural.
The good news is that feeling comfortable in photos is not something you have to figure out on your own. A big part of my job as a senior photographer is helping students relax and actually enjoy the experience.
After photographing seniors in the St. Louis and Wentzville area for over 15 years, I have developed a process that helps sessions feel fun, natural, and easy.
We Start Slowly
The first few minutes of any photo session are simply about getting comfortable.
We talk, walk around the location, and ease into the shoot rather than jumping straight into poses. This helps seniors relax and forget about the camera.
Most of the time, within ten minutes the nervousness fades and the session starts to feel natural.
You Don’t Need to Know How to Pose
One of the biggest concerns seniors have is not knowing what to do in front of the camera.
That’s completely normal.
During the session I guide you through poses step by step. I help with things like where to stand, how to angle your shoulders, and how to create natural expressions.
My goal is to make everything feel easy and relaxed so you never feel like you are guessing what to do.
We Focus on Personality
Senior portraits should feel like you.
Some seniors are outgoing and energetic. Others are quiet and thoughtful. Every personality is different, and the session is designed to reflect that.
Instead of forcing stiff poses, I focus on capturing natural moments, expressions, and genuine smiles.
That is when the best photos happen.
Outfits and Locations Help Build Confidence
Another way I help seniors feel comfortable is by choosing locations and outfits that match their style.
Some seniors prefer nature settings like parks or fields. Others love the look of downtown areas and urban backgrounds.
Bringing a few different outfits also adds variety and helps seniors feel confident in front of the camera.

Sessions Are Meant to Be Fun
Senior portraits should never feel stressful.
Most sessions end up feeling more like hanging out, exploring great locations, and capturing moments along the way. By the end of the session, many seniors tell me they actually had fun — even if they were nervous at the beginning.
That relaxed experience is what helps create natural, confident images.
