A headshot is a portrait where you focus in on a person's face, which would typically include their shoulders as well. It can be taken from different angles, express different moods, and feeling, depending on what you are using it for.
You should try to avoid wearing flesh tone type colors as they tend to blend your face into your clothes. Plain colors are really the best choice. The color you choose can portray a mood. Think of how a color such as black could typically convey a feeling of elegance and sophistication.
If you wear a pattern or print, know that it could potentially distract and maybe even date your photo.
For a more natural looking image, you don’t need to apply heavy eye makeup etc. If you are going more for a model look, or high-end styled photographs I would recommend getting your hair and makeup done by a stylist or in a salon. If you like, go all out and wear some fake eyelashes. Be sure your nails are nicely manicured in case they end up in the photo. Badly painted or manicured nails can be distracting.
Now that social media has taken on such a vital role in promoting our professional abilities, having a good headshot is very important. A good headshot gives people an idea of your personality before they meet you. A smile can portray approachability where a serious look can convey determination.
